The role of PBMs, patents, and public health in drug pricing
Prescription drug costs are remarkably higher in the United States than in other countries, so it’s no surprise that more than half of U.S. adults say they are worried about being able to afford their medications. These high costs have led many people to skip doses, take less than the prescribed amount, delay filling prescriptions, and even go without treatment altogether.
But why are prices so high in the first place? And why is it so hard to rein them in?
In this video series, we take you behind the pharmacy counter to explore the factors involved in pricing prescription drugs. We look at how a complex relationship between drugmakers, insurers, and pharmacy benefit managers contributes to...

How pharmacy benefit managers influence drug pricing
Просмотров 88121 день назад
The point of prescription drugs is to help people improve their quality of life. When a doctor writes a prescription and sends it along to the pharmacy, oftentimes they’re more focused on the drug’s effectiveness than its cost. But when a patient picks up that drug, the price they will be asked to pay at the counter takes center stage - and it depends on a complex combination of factors. Is it ...

A team of engineers at Harvard University is developing wearable robots that may someday help patients with neurodegenerative disease. A device that assists with movement could be very beneficial for patients with limited mobility, such as those with ALS, a disease that affects the neurons in the brain responsible for motor control. Training restaurant workers to reverse overdoses
Просмотров 729Месяц назад
The tables set up near the entrance of the Big Night Live concert venue looked like a typical merch spread. But instead of band T-shirts and buttons, there were plastic models of human noses and a handful of naloxone nasal sprays. This unusual display was part of a medical training for bar and restaurant workers - who are often the first to encounter people experiencing a drug overdose. Led by ...

Why fentanyl withdrawal is so unbearable
Просмотров 259 тыс.4 месяца назад
Over 2 million Americans have opioid use disorder, according to some estimates. Illicit opioids such as heroin and fentanyl were responsible for over 80,000 U.S. overdose deaths in 2023. Despite the known risks, these drugs are notoriously hard to stop using - due in large part to how debilitating withdrawal can be. “People get trapped in this terrible cycle where they don’t feel normal, they c...

I’ve only had fentanyl once in my life and it was in a controlled medical setting. As someone who has never really used drugs in general, the best way I could describe the feeling was that it turned down the volume on everything from a 10 down to like a 2. I was terrified and crying because I had to get an injection in my shoulder with a big long needle to block the nerves in my arm. As soon as they pushed the fentanyl into my IV for the injection, I was still scared and still understood what was happening, but I was just so much more okay with it. Everything felt quieter in every way, both in the sense that sounds were quieter, but also everything was just way less intense. I can rationalize why someone in certain very stressful life circumstances would be attracted to that feeling. I can’t pretend to truly understand but it helped me a lot to empathize with how people can start to become dependent on it in the first place

I'll just say I've done fentanyl and methadone is better to get off of it than buprenorphine at least for the first week of coming off it because taking buprenorphine can send you into worst withdrawals within the first few days of coming off of fentanyl

The moment I thought to myself "What bone can I break to get more pills?", I quit THAT day. Years of mental health drugs, quit. Cold Turkey. Booze for decades. Quit. None of which was easy. And for the love of common sense, ITS NOT AN ILLNESS. To call it an illness is to remove the user's personal responsibility. It's insulting to people with real medical illnesses that they didn't create themselves. Most things in life that are gonna be of the greatest benefit, are not easy to obtain, create or change. But, will be worth it.

I went thru a bad wreck to where I shattered my spine (so badly they were unsure if I’d be able to walk again) had a spinal fusion, had half of my colon, as well as part of my intestines removed, my appendix removed, a broken femur, and a broken jaw, all at once. And that pain didn’t compare to the pain of heroin withdrawal. And no, I had no pain alleviation as my opioid tolerance was too high. So I sat in that hospital suffering. And I’d take that over opioid withdrawal. I wish people who were ignorant to addiction understand the amount of suffering that comes with it.

I got spiked with some sort of drug a month or so ago. The withdrawals the day after was insane. I was throwing up non stop, no food just pure bile. I thought I was going to die. I’m not sure what drug it was but to this day it’s really put drug withdrawal into perspective. It is HARD and whoever gets past that stage you are strong.

Fentanyl addiction can be equated to eating food. Once the addiction is so severe your body wants the drug just as bad as it wants food for nourishment. If you want to know how hard it is to go through withdrawal and not use to alleviate the symptoms, stop eating food one day and let your body start to deteriorate and tell you in the worst way that you need food, but still refrain from eating. That’s about what it’s like to be in withdrawal and not continue to use.

When I was taken to the ER in acute FentanyI WD, the nurse came in and asked me to sit up so she could give me some pills to swallow. That was the moment I started crying bc I realized "holy shit, they don't know what the hell they're doing." But I was too sick to stand up and leave. I'd describe the rest of the nightmare but RUclips will just censor it. Let's just say they didn't gaf or understand how to treat it properly. Which blew my mind considering how common it is these days. Horrible.

Psilocybin mushrooms are in no way dangerous it is safe and effective treatment for most mental health issues promotes brain function creates new nural pathways and a higher train of thought the only situation when they could be dangerous would be driving or doing a “heroic dose” which is highly dangerous which is typically 8-14 grams of mushrooms

watching this video, it is absolutely beyond me that within the AA community treatments like methadone are demonized. they really preach within their traditions that if you dont quit cold turkey, you didn’t do it right and you are doomed to relapse. unfortunately that community is full of logical fallacies, herd mentality and dogma. and it’s widely the only support available to addicts trying to stay sober.

Kratom. Saved my life. No addict needs to suffer needlessly anymore. Will it solve day 1-3 of opiate withdrawal? Not completely. But when you combine it with a handful of Imodium it will absolutely get you from the suicide zone into the not suicide zone. It will get you well enough to resolve kicking and the temperature problems. After day 3 Kratom will get you to 75%. It’s not a miracle, but it’s good enough.

Please stop comparing withdrawals with a “flu”. The only accurate comparison I’ve heard and can tell by experience it’s true, is what terminal cancer patients go through. And it has to be explained better that this pain is 24/7 without a second of relief, and that for some of us it can last for way more than the common 10 to 15 days talked about in almost every text. It can go for weeks or even months, and with long half life opioids or opiates like methadone it can go on for years. It’s different from person to person, and that’s why some can kick this curse and some can’t.
